Beverage Formulation

A beverage formulation is more than an ingredient list. Quantities, order of addition and process parameters influence taste, consistency and how the product behaves during manufacturing. Based in Bulgaria, LipoStrong provides independent beverage development services for brands in Bulgaria and across Europe. This service creates or refines a formulation, including work on a specific problem such as excessive sweetness, an unbalanced acid profile, texture or production cost.

When formulation work is useful

You may have a clear product concept but no defined formula. Alternatively, you may already make a drink that is not performing as intended. Flavour may vary between batches, a new functional ingredient may introduce bitterness, or a change in sweetness may affect the whole profile. These are connected formulation questions. Replacing one ingredient without considering the rest of the system is rarely a sound way to judge the result.

At the outset, we establish what must change and what must stay. An existing formulation, product sample, ingredient information or manufacturing outline can provide a useful starting point. If none exists, we begin with the desired flavour, beverage category, audience, packaging and indicative cost target. The work is then defined around the actual formulation problem.

How the formulation is developed

We consider the beverage base, sweetening system, acidity, aroma and any selected functional ingredients together. Candidate variants are prepared with specified quantities and assessed as physical samples. Evaluation covers first impression, intensity, aftertaste and mouthfeel as well as whether the drink matches the original brief. Tasting and feedback provide a more reliable direction than a formulation on paper alone.

After selecting a direction, we refine the formula and assess raw material availability, production cost, order of addition and processing conditions. Where plant proteins, minerals or botanical extracts are involved, flavour and compatibility need particular attention. Including an ingredient does not, by itself, establish product stability, support a product claim or confirm a shelf life.

The result and the move to production

For a full formulation project, the final formulation specifies exact ingredient quantities and dosages with a defined working sequence. We document key process parameters and raw material recommendations; physical samples allow the variant to be assessed. For a focused improvement to an existing drink, we record what has changed and what still needs checking. Additional documents and testing are specified for the particular beverage.

A laboratory prototype is a basis for a production trial, not proof that the drink will behave identically with every machine and batch size. Mixing, processing, filling and packaging conditions may need adjustment during scale-up. You remain free to select the manufacturing partner. LipoStrong's formulation service does not commit you to production at a particular facility.

Shelf life depends on the formulation, processing, packaging and storage conditions. We can develop with a target shelf life and stability profile in mind. The final shelf life must be confirmed through appropriate testing of the finished beverage in its final packaging under relevant storage conditions.

Common questions

Can you work with our existing formula?

Yes. We first identify the qualities to preserve and the issue to address, whether that relates to flavour, composition, production cost or process behaviour.

Do we receive exact ingredient quantities?

Yes. In a full formulation project, the final formulation specifies exact ingredient quantities and dosages and a defined working sequence. For a focused adjustment, we document the parameters changed.

Can shelf life be guaranteed from the formulation alone?

No. We can develop with a target shelf life and stability profile in mind, but the final shelf life must be confirmed through appropriate testing of the finished product in its final packaging under relevant conditions.
